From the time we are old enough to understand what it means to be in competition with each other, we begin to believe that if someone else has or gets something we want, then there is less for us, or worse, we are left with nothing at all.
There are so many reality shows that perpetuate the concept of winners and losers, being at the top or on the bottom. This kind of reality also perpetuates the notion of being the strongest, the prettiest, the smartest and the person with the most degrees or awards.
We are made to feel that if we don’t have some of these attributes, accolades or characteristics, then somehow we are less valuable, less worthy and certainly don’t deserve to have a life filled with happiness, abundance and prosperity, much less healthy, loving relationships.
We are taught that there isn’t enough for everyone to have what they want because there is someone who already has it or is on the way to getting it, leaving little for us.
Then we begin learning and hearing that we are worthy and deserve to be happy, to have what we want and to live a prosperous life filled with passion, financial wealth and unconditional love.
That’s when the constant Ego-chitter chatter in our heads begins to brainwash us that we are being selfish and the more we have the more selfish and greedy we are and somehow we are depriving others from having enough.
We are taught that the ideas, thoughts and emotions that compel us to seek our purpose, start a business, rise to the top of the corporate ladder and live a richly rewarding life, that there is an unwritten rule that we must choose between honoring our Spirituality or being financially successful.
This is a terrible, limiting place of lack and scarcity to be in. If we are afraid of someone else doing the same thing we are, we become fearful that they will take what is rightful ours and we are left with just scraping by or worse, with nothing to show for our efforts.
If you don’t believe me, look around. There are competitions for just about everything.
So let’s take a closer look at what competition, lack and scarcity have in common with each other.
Competition is all about beating someone else out, being the one and only winner.
Scarcity is all about there not being enough to go around; if we give then there might not have enough for ourselves so we have to hold onto what we have.
Lack is focusing on what we don’t have and at times what others have, that we can’t; it’s feeling like everyone else is doing better, having more and certainly more successful than we are no matter what we try to do.
What all three of these concepts and beliefs have in common is that they are all about thinking, feeling and living in fear. It’s a fear of someone else finding out what we think, how much income we make OR don’t make, what our dreams are.
We are afraid to let anyone know that we have made mistakes along the way. It’s a fear of what others will say about us and how we are perceived.
Lack and scarcity are about comparing ourselves to someone else to see if we are as good as they are. These kinds of thoughts are a way of measuring up to someone else’s standards because we have been made to feel that we aren’t worthy or deserving of having what we want without sacrifice, hard work and struggle.
Don’t misunderstand me. There is room for competition in our lives. It is an essential part of the world we live in. Competition propels us to be the best we can be, to invent and discover new ways of doing something that benefits everyone.
The point of being so very blunt and transparent about this is for one reason, one intention only.
When we compare ourselves to each other, we devalue who we are and what we have to offer. We dishonor and disrespect our own dreams, denying that we are truly unlimited except by our own thoughts, mind-sets and beliefs.
We can choose to be in competition with ourselves, our past accomplishments and yes, even our set-backs and failures. We can choose to set ourselves up for success instead of allowing Ego-chitter chatter to keep us in our place, in a box of limited vision, lack and simply struggling for the rest of our days.
I challenge you to see beyond your current circumstances, accept where you, who you are and what you are doing with your life.
Choose to do more, see more, becoming more aware of your unlimited potential creating your reality by being in competition with yourself.
The ultimate prize is to change your reality from one of being in competition with others, seeing lack and scarcity to one of opulence, being of service, prosperity and abundance.
